Fire Wave &Elephant Rock
Striped sandstone, holes you can climb inside, and a rock elephant — an hour from the Las Vegas Strip.
Overview · starts Las Vegas, 5:30 am
Nevada's oldest state park looks like it is on fire at sunrise. The Aztec sandstone here is riddled with tafoni: pockets, windows and caves the size of a car, carved by salt and wind. We visit the Fire Wave, the White Domes slot and Elephant Rock, and stop at every hole worth putting your head through.
It is the easiest trip we run and the best one for families. Trails are short, the van is never far away, and we are back in Las Vegas before the pool gets crowded.
