Overview · starts Moab, 6:15 am

Arches National Park holds more than two thousand natural stone arches, and most visitors see four of them from a car window. We walk to them. The day starts on the slickrock ramp to Delicate Arch while the La Sal Mountains are still pink, and ends in the shade of Double Arch with the whole Windows Section to ourselves.

Your guide carries a geology background and explains every formation standing next to it: why the Entrada sandstone fins split, why some arches are called windows, and how long Landscape Arch has left. Timed-entry tickets for the park are on us.

Itinerary

Hour by hour.

  1. We are on the trail before sunrise. The last stretch runs along a narrow ledge, then the arch appears all at once. Coffee and a pastry on the rim while the light changes.

  2. North and South Window, Turret Arch and the two spans of Double Arch — the tallest opening in the park at 112 ft.

  3. Lunch in the shade, then a stroll down Park Avenue between sandstone walls before the heat.
