Heat is the most common danger on the plateau, and the easiest to prevent. Our medic trains every guide on these rules before the season starts.
The rules
- Start at first light. Summer trips end by 11 am.
- No hiking above 95°F. We reschedule, no discussion.
- Drink before you are thirsty and eat something salty every hour.
- Shade every 45 minutes, even if no one asks.
- Anyone can call a turnaround, and no one needs to explain why.

Know the signs
Headache, nausea and goosebumps in the heat mean stop now, find shade and cool down.
The desert does not care how fit you are.
