A house and its garden are one project. We have never managed to treat them apart.

Since 2015 we have finished 74 projects across northern Portugal — apartments in Porto, houses in the Douro valley, two small hotels and rather more gardens than we had planned on.

Two architects, a garden designer and a joiner who has been with us since the second year. Eight projects run at a time, which is why we ask about the planting on the first visit and not at the end.

Layouts first: where the doors go, where the light lands, and which walls are honestly load-bearing. Then joinery drawn piece by piece, materials specified by name, and lighting planned before the electrician arrives rather than after.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

Do you take the garden and the interior separately?
We do, and about a third of our work is one or the other. But if both are on the table we would rather draw them together — the two decisions that matter most, where the doors go and where the shade falls, belong to the same drawing.
Do you work with our builder?
Gladly. We also have four crews in the Porto area we have used for years and can put you in touch. Either way, the drawings are made so that any competent builder can tender from them.
Is there a minimum project?
A single room is usually too small for the way we work; a single garden is not. Below about €9,000 of studio fee we tend to say so honestly and suggest someone else.
How involved do we have to be?
Three decision meetings are unavoidable: layout, materials and joinery. After that, as much or as little as you like — some clients come to every site visit, others see the house finished.
When can you start?
We open two slots each quarter. Planting is scheduled to the season regardless of when you sign — nothing goes in the ground in August.
Clients

What they say afterwards

They asked about the garden on the first visit, before the kitchen. A year on, that turns out to have been the whole point.
