Velvetrecords

( Velvet Records · independent label · Lisbon )

Slow music, pressed in red — for rooms that listen.

We are a small label that makes records you can hold: 180 g, red all the way through, cut from tape and pressed in batches of five hundred. No algorithm — just a needle, a side, and twenty minutes of your attention.

Eight songs recorded in one week in a flat above Rua da Rosa, mostly at night, with the window open. You can hear a tram on track two. We left it in.

( Why we do it )

A record is twenty minutes of your attention. No skip button, no playlist, no feed — just a needle, a side, and a room that goes quiet. We make every one of those twenty minutes worth getting up for.

( The catalogue )

Eight records, all of them red.

Scarlet Hours

Album: Scarlet Hours · Words & music: Mara Vey

The kettle's on, the city's still asleep,

I count the trams like other people count sheep.

You left a record turning on the floor —

the needle's at the end, it hums, and nothing more.

I tried to lift it, but I let it play:

that little crackle sounds like you would stay.

So I'll keep the scarlet hours,

I'll keep the light on in the hall,

and if you never call —

the record turns, and that's not nothing at all.

( On the cover · Scarlet Hours )

Shot in one take, in a red room.

We hung red felt on every wall of a Lisbon flat, switched off everything but one lamp, and let Mara listen to the finished record with her eyes closed. Point at the picture — it bends towards you.
