At thirty centimetres a trailer is a trailer, not a smudge. Counting what is actually in the yard at five in the morning is a different business from trusting yesterday's manifest.

Water moves too

Inland waterway levels and lock queues change faster than the gauges report them. A pass every twelve minutes is close enough to plan a day around.
