How we built a house on water

Recycled hardwood, screw piles and no concrete in the lagoon.

The water villas stand on screw piles, not concrete. They twist into the sand and can be removed without a trace.

The decks are reclaimed teak from old ships; the roofs are thatch from the island’s own palms, replaced every six years.

Before we built, a team of divers moved 1,400 coral fragments to a nursery. Most of them are now back on the reef.

“The lagoon was here first. We tried to leave it as we found it.”

Water is made from the sea and solar panels cover every roof of the back of house.

Each villa has a glass floor panel, lit at night. Fish gather under it; so do guests.

It took two years. The lagoon took about two months to forget us.
