Light as a material

Jun Seo-yeon on neon, darkness and why her rooms change colour when you enter.

Jun Seo-yeon trained as an architect before she ever made art. She still draws every installation in section.

Her material is light, but her real subject is time: how long it takes for your eyes to adjust, and what you see while they do.

In Afterglow, sensors in the floor change the colour of each room as visitors move through it.

“Darkness is the most expensive thing in my installations.”

Each room is painted with a black that absorbs 99% of light, so the neon seems to float.

The installation uses less power than a kettle. Jun insisted on it.

Visit late, when the rooms are empty. That is when they are at their best.
