4,200 metres, by helicopter

A day of heli-skiing on the Monte Rosa, from the landing to the long glide home.

Switzerland allows heli-skiing only on a few landing sites. The Monte Rosa is the highest, at 4,200 metres.

The flight from Zermatt takes eight minutes. You land on a saddle of snow between Italy and Switzerland.

From there, 2,000 metres of descent across the Grenzgletscher, roped where the crevasses are wide.

“The helicopter leaves. Then it is very quiet, and very big.”

A mountain guide leads every group, and the chalet’s ski host checks the snow report at five.

It is a long day: the last stretch is a glide along the Gorner glacier to Furi.

That evening, the hot tub feels like the best invention in human history.
